Menstrual hygiene policy for school students framed, approved: Centre to SC

The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that the “Menstrual Hygiene Policy for School Going Girls” was approved by the Union Health Ministry on November 2, 2024. This policy aims to improve menstrual hygiene awareness and access to sanitary products for female students in government and aided schools, addressing barriers to their mobility and participation in activities. The initiative responds to a public interest litigation seeking free sanitary pads and separate toilets for girls in Classes 6-12, ensuring a supportive environment for menstrual health.

Specific measures are included in the new menstrual hygiene policy

The newly approved “Menstrual Hygiene Policy for School Going Girls” includes several specific measures aimed at improving menstrual hygiene among female students:

- Access to Sanitary Products: The policy ensures regular access to sanitary pads for girls in government and aided schools, promoting safe menstrual practices.

- Separate Toilets: It mandates the provision of separate toilet facilities for female students in all government and government-aided schools, addressing privacy and hygiene needs.

- Awareness Programs: The initiative aims to enhance knowledge and change attitudes regarding menstruation, overcoming social stigmas that restrict girls’ mobility and participation in school activities.

- Environmentally Friendly Waste Management: The policy promotes environmentally sustainable practices for managing menstrual waste.

These measures are designed to create a supportive environment for menstrual health in schools.
